What is the NDIS?

what is the ndis

The NDIS, also known as the National Disability Insurance Scheme was formed in 2013 and went into full operation in 2020. The NDIS was initiated to cover costs associated with disability and to help connect people with disabilities to services in their community.

In simple terms, the NDIS is a government program that helps people with disabilities get the support they need. It is like an insurance plan that provides funding for different services and supports tailored to each person’s specific needs. The NDIS is all about giving individuals with disabilities more control and choice in their lives. It helps individuals access things like therapy, equipment, and personal care services. The goal of the NDIS is to empower people with disabilities to live more independently, be involved in their communities, and achieve their goals.

Services

The NDIS aims to provide sufficient support to individuals living with a significant or permanent disability. However, the supports funded by the NDIS are divided into three categories:

1. Core Supports: This support covers everything regarding personal care assistance, social support, community participation, and funding for transport.

2. Capacity Building: Support under this category is intended to promote the independence of individuals living with disability and give them enough confidence to be able to manage their own life.

3. Capital Supports: The Capital Support budget was established to cover the costs of expensive assistive technology and home or vehicle modifications.
